Building Integrated Photovoltaic To The Max

The building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) industry is looking towards mid 2010 for it's newest product launch. The Dow Chemical corporation has announced that It will be supplying a limited amount of their newest solar shingles to its partners by mid year in 2010.

These solar collecting, electricity producing shingles are integrated right into the roofing material. They act as both the roof sealing material and electrical manufacturing units. Their low profile integrates well with other standard roof shingle products.

The collectors can be installed by any licensed roofing contractor with the electrical hook up provided by qualified electrical contractors. In fact after a sneak peek at these shingle/solar collectors it is obvious that the home owner with any hands on practice could install them him/her self. The electrical connection to the homes existing power box may be left to a professional for prudence sake.

This new product has that good looking, totally integrated appearance that we all would appreciate on our homes. In fact there is no comparsion in style and design with the old solar panels sitting on most roofs today

The efficiency is not at the top ranks but compared to thin film they are in the ball park. However, when we begin to see that we can connect our roof to our other solar collecting devices around our home the total electrical manufacturing capability of our homes could provide a large steady stream of electrical power.

Another new device that was introduced just recently is the poolside umbrella solar collector and distribution unit. This gadget collects and stores electricity in battery like devices right in the pole of the umbrella. You can plug directly into the outlets provided around the pole at the table top level. Your lap top, phone and beer cooler are all examples of some of what you may require electricity for, around the pool.

Konarka Technologies is distributing their poolside umbrella in Europe this year and should be available in the U.S. next year. Below are the links for all the products and company's mentioned in this article.
